Recession beating advice for farmers in Belford

Posted by The Journal on Jan 26, 09 02:11 PM in News

English Farming and Food Partnerships is holding workshops in Belford and elsewhere in Northumberland to offer advice on how farmers could ride out the recession.

The sessions will explain how arable, dairy and livestock farmers can work together to capitalise on the current economic climate, saying that customers are realising the importance of locally-produced food because of the fall in sterling and the current economic gloom.

Using its Share to Farm initiative, EFFP will be showing farmers how they can work together to reduce costs and market their produce to a wider audience.

Speakers at the workshops include Rob Munro from GrainCo, Terence Pardoe from Coastal Grain, livestock farmer Richard Finlay from the North Yorks Moor Lamb Project and Frank Foster Supply Chain Manager from Linden Foods.

Doug Gray, EFFP's regional manager for the North East, said: "The dynamics of the economy are changing dramatically, which is creating opportunities for farmers as the food chain looks to secure its supply.

"For farmers to take advantage of this they need to work together and present an organised and professional offering, so that they can make the most of the changing market. Working together will also present potential for farmers to further increase their efficiencies of production, reduce risk and gain financial support for investment.

"The workshops are aimed at raising awareness of the possibilities and gathering like minded farmers together to take projects forward."

Sessions will be held at the Royal Derwent Hotel at Allensford on February 3, The Coquetvale Hotel in Rothbury on February 11, Morpeth Rugby Club on February 17 and the Purdy Lodge Hotel at Adderstone, near Belford, on February 18.

The workshops begin at 7.30pm and include a light supper, but places must be booked in advance. For more information and to reserve your place please contact Enid or Clare on 01904 451550 or email north.east@nfuonline.com.
