Belford farmer makes a difference in egg trade
Making the free range egg industry more competitive in Britain and Europe was at the heart of address made by Northumberland farmer Christine Jackson to the prestigious Annual Nuffield Conference.

Miss Jackson, who runs Sunny Hill Free Range Eggs at Belford with her sister Catherine Armstrong, was awarded the 2007 Young Nuffield Scholar of the Year and presented her final study papers to more than 200 people at the event in Exeter.
Her Developing and Marketing the Free Range Egg Sector within the UK and Europe has now been submitted to industry experts.
She chose the topic because of pressure free range egg producers will face from forthcoming EU directives, the 2012 cage ban and the growth of the industry.
She travelled across Europe and to the US, Canada, South America and Australia to meet egg producers as part of her research.
"This has been a one in a lifetime opportunity which has given me the chance to research the egg industry across the world and to bring back best practice examples to present the UK egg industry," said Miss Jackson.
"In the UK we must look at innovative marketing techniques and the industry must take eggs back to basics to educate our consumers.
"With the escalating obesity problem the world is facing we must shout out about the wonderful research on eggs and their healthy properties as opposed to myths.
"I also believe that we should also be considering developing the egg products sector as this is an untapped market segment with huge earning capacity for itself.
"Although it is still early days from my research there are innovative ideas I would like to implement into our own free range egg business."
